The Australian brand’s first Toronto showroom is a masterclass in modular luxury

Tucked into the heart of Toronto’s Castlefield Design District, King Living has quietly made a grand entrance. The storied Australian furniture brand—long celebrated for its precision-engineered sofas and commitment to enduring design—has opened its very first showroom in Toronto, marking only the second in Canada after Vancouver. (The company also recently launched in Calgary and has its sights set on Montreal in early 2026.) And much like its furniture, the arrival feels intentional and built to last.

Founded in 1977 by David King, the family-owned company began as a solution to a simple design problem: furniture that didn’t live up to the rigours of everyday life. “David and his mother were flipping homes in Australia and couldn’t find pieces that really stood out,” explains Yohan Oberto, King Living’s Business Development Manager. “So he designed his own—furniture that was beautiful, highly functional and built to outlive trends and wear.”

At the core of the King difference is its engineering-first approach. All of its sofas are built on a proprietary steel frame (with a 25-year warranty), incorporating a unique suspension system inspired by German automotive design. This innovation not only ensures lasting comfort and durability but also allows for an unprecedented level of modularity. The iconic Jasper sofa, for instance, can convert from a sectional to a pair of loveseats, into a guest bed, and even includes options like integrated storage, wireless charging, and LED lighting.

This thoughtful attention to detail reflects King Living’s broader international strategy: deliberate, not rushed. “We waited for the right space in Toronto because it matters. We plan for the long term, and we build for the long term. The showroom had to reflect that,” says CEO David Woollcott.

King Living doesn’t just manufacture its furniture—it designs, builds, ships, and retails it entirely in-house. This vertical integration allows for a high level of craftsmanship and surprisingly accessible price points. “You’d expect to pay $15,000 or more for a system like this,” says Oberto. “Our price points come in well below that—sometimes even under $5,000 for a full sectional.”

Everything in the Castlefield showroom is made to order, from sofas and beds to shelving and ceramic-topped coffee tables. Clients can select from a wide range of upholstery—including high-performance velvets, Italian leathers, and outdoor-grade Sunbrella fabrics. Nearly every design feature is customizable, down to the firmness level in seating or the curvature of a sofa arm. Even mattresses are modular, flippable, and zoned for dual comfort preferences—a detail King Living has reimagined with its typical precision.

The brand’s expansion into Canada feels especially well-aligned. “Canadian and Australian lifestyles are remarkably similar,” says Oberto. “There’s a shared love of nature, a preference for relaxed, functional design, and a real focus on quality over quantity.” The company’s ethos of longevity and sustainability also resonates. “You don’t have to buy new every few years—we’ve had clients bring a sofa from Australia to Canada, swap the covers 13 years later, and it looks like a brand-new sofa.”

Globally, King Living now spans eight countries with 40 showrooms, and aims to reach 60 by 2029. Yet each move remains thoughtful, not reactive—balancing ambition with authenticity. Despite being new to the Toronto market, King Living has found an eager audience among both design professionals and discerning homeowners. “The response has been incredible,” says Oberto. “People walk in, sit down, and realize—this is different. And then they hear the price and go, ‘Really?’”

In a city saturated with fast furniture and fleeting trends, King Living’s Toronto showroom offers a compelling counterpoint: luxury that’s tactile, transformable, and arguably timeless.
